The pandemic’s health
challenges are enormous
and deeply intertwined
with existing inequalities
.

A recent UN report says that
more than one billion people live in
informal settlements. They lack
adequate housing, running water,
and proper toilets.

Indigenous groups are
particularly at risk , as well as
LGBTIQ+ people. They are reporting
more violence, increased social
isolation and anxiety as
well as difficulties in getting HIV
treatment and gender-affirming
health services.

UNDP is the lead UN agency on the COVID-19
socio-economic response. We understand that
health and income are inextricably linked.

We are supporting governments in their efforts to provide social protection and measures such as a
Temporary Basic Income, to allow people who are not covered by social insurance programmes to stay
home and avoid infection, while still having an income.

The International
Labour Organization

estimates that 400
million people could
lose their jobs
.

The World Bank projects that a multi-billion dollar drop in remittances could mean 800 million people won’t meet their basic needs. The World Food Programme warns that 135 million people face crisis levels of hunger, while an additional 130 million are on the edge of starvation.

Gender

Women are on the frontlines of the health
response
—they make up the majority of
nursing staff worldwide.

If they can work from home, they will have to take on additional domestic and educational burdens,
and may not be safe while there; reports of domestic violence have surged during lockdown.

Education
equality

A recent Lancet report emphasizes the crucial link between health and
education. It has a strong correlation with life expectancy and healthy
behaviour. It plays an important role in determining life opportunities and
income levels.

We live in a world with massive widespread loss of income, and uncertainty about the future. Early reports suggest that

loneliness
stress
depression
anxiety
harmful alcohol
drug use
self-harm
suicide

are expected to rise, particularly amongst frontline health workers.
